What is an MCP server?

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is an open standard that lets AI agents use tools inside other software. An MCP server is the piece that exposes those tools. Once an agent connects to the HiringThing MCP server, it can create jobs, set up candidate ranking criteria, review applications, and report on your pipeline using the same data you see when you log in.

HiringThing was built API-first, so our core recruiting workflows were already available to developers through our Open API. The MCP server packages those workflows in a format agents understand. It's a standard remote MCP server, which means there's no custom SDK to install and nothing to host yourself.

Four ways to put it to work

Your ATS, accessible to your agent

Recruiters can hand routine work to their AI assistant. Say "Open a Senior Nurse role in Denver," and the agent suggests a competitive pay rate, drafts the description from one of your templates, creates the job, tags it, and assigns it to a career site.

Custom apps built by your team

Pair the MCP server with an AI coding tool like Claude Code, and you can build a small app on top of your hiring data in an afternoon. A hiring manager dashboard that shows each open role next to its ranked shortlist makes a good first project. You describe what you want, and the agent writes the code and pulls live data from HiringThing.

Custom reporting on demand

Every organization wants its hiring data sliced a little differently. With an agent connected, you can ask a question in plain language and get the answer in seconds. A request like "Show applicant volume and stage distribution for every open role in our Texas locations" used to mean a support ticket or an hour in a spreadsheet.

Integrations on the fly

Many teams connect their AI assistant to several tools at once. When HiringThing is one of them, the agent can move information between systems whenever you ask. It can post each new job to a Slack channel or drop a weekly pipeline summary into a shared spreadsheet. Nobody has to build or maintain a traditional integration to make that happen.

Connecting your first agent

You need two things to get started: the HiringThing MCP endpoint URL and a credential pair from your account. Add both to your MCP client, and your agent is ready to go. Our Connecting Agents guide walks through setup step by step.

For a first prompt, try something you already know the answer to, like "List my open jobs and how many applicants each one has." It confirms the connection and gives you a feel for how the agent works with your data.

Who can use it

The HiringThing MCP server is available today to white label partners and to customers on the Pro plan. Partners can offer agent access to their own clients under their own brand.
