Why HiringThing Loves Remote Work

A remote employee smiles because they love remote work.

HiringThing Has Been Fully Remote Since 2012

When our CEO, Joshua Siler, founded HiringThing in 2012, he aimed to create a product he wanted to use at a company he wanted to work for, and Siler wanted the flexibility, autonomy, productivity, and healthy work/life balance that comes with remote work.

HiringThing has been fully remote since our inception, and the team is comprised of individuals who’ve purposely sought a remote work experience. Employees overwhelmingly love remote work—Buffer’s State of Remote Work report found that 99% of remote workers want to continue working remotely!

Only 16% of U.S. companies are entirely remote.

While remote work has certainly never been more popular, only 16% of U.S. companies are entirely remote, like HiringThing, so we feel qualified to appoint ourselves remote-work experts.

Remote Work is Employee-Centric

It’s no surprise that so many employees are drawn to remote work, as it’s an employee-centric work model.

  • 84% of employees shared that working remotely would make them happier, 80% of remote workers experience less work-related stress than their in-person counterparts, and they’re consistently more satisfied with their jobs than their in-person counterparts.
  • Remote employees save both time and money. In particular, our team seems to love their lack of commute—HiringThing Director of Customer Success Amanda Clark told us she saves a full hour a day as her previous role had a 30-minute one-way commute (statistically, remote workers save an average of $1700 a year by not commuting and $4,000 a year in general working remotely).
  • Flexibility, autonomy, and the ability to create your own work environment consistently score big with remote employees.

Remote Work Gets Results

Remote work not only benefits employees but organizations too!

  • A Stanford University remote-work study found that remote workers use fewer sick days, are more productive, and employee performance went up 22% when working remotely.
  • FlexJobs found that 95% of remote workers say productivity has been higher or the same while working remotely.
  • The Owl Labs 2021 State of Remote Work Report found only 1% of remote workers said they were less productive than when they worked on location, while an overwhelming 67% said they were more productive.

FlexJobs found that 95% of remote workers say productivity has been higher or the same while working remotely.

Stats certainly tell a story, but why not hear it directly from individuals who live remote lives every day? We asked the HiringThing team to tell us what they love most about remote work and are sharing their insights below.

Why Our Team Loves Remote Work

"One of the biggest benefits of working remotely for me has been no commuting required!  Commuting was always an energy suck for me.  Dealing with a large number of irritable drivers, all stuck together with no escape, was a daily downer.  Now, with the addition of massive inflation in gas prices, I am grateful that I am able to save money and avoid the traffic that seems to be everywhere.” - Gilian Maniccia, Sales & Marketing Coordinator

No Commute, No eating out for lunch = Tons of money saved. Given the equal footing of everyone being remote, there is true respect and encouragement to have work-life balance and disconnect on nights and weekends.” -Aaron Adamkiewicz, Partner Success Manager

“I like being home when my daughter gets home from school. I also have the flexibility to pick her up if my wife cannot. I like that my dog isn't crated for 8 hours a day. I can throw in a load of laundry or wash the dishes etc. as a break, and less interruptions at home than in the office = me able to focus on my work!” -Greg Schneider, Sr. Product UX Designer

“The biggest benefit of working remotely to me is that I have more time to spend with my family because I'm not wasting time commuting.

My favorite aspect of remote work is that I can focus more easily without the distractions of an office environment. For me, I sometimes require quiet places so I can think more clearly and solve coding problems. I'm also able to work from wherever I am at the time, which means I can travel and use my nights/weekends to explore new places. Working remotely provides the ultimate level of flexibility.” - Bonnie Grubbs, Engineer II

Remote work supports my health. I can whip up a fresh meal on the spot. I walk the dog at the most convenient time (when the rain stops). Not commuting gives me the time back to fit in a 30-minute workout. Most importantly, the flexibility of work-from-anywhere allows me to be human and find balance in my life.”- Joanna Hartvickson, Director of Marketing

“The biggest benefit is control over key aspects of my work environment, such as the ability to work without background noise or distraction and the ability to set up my workspace in a way that meets my needs and optimizes my productivity. Fun benefits: Having my own private bathroom and never having to worry about spinach getting stuck in my teeth because I can check before I log onto a video call.

I am most comfortable when I am working from home in my office setup. Being comfortable sets the foundation for everything else that's important—productivity, ergonomic work environment, good mental health, and general happiness at work.” -Jess Tejani, COO

Working remotely allows me to balance the everyday life of motherhood without losing who I am outside of ‘mom.’ As a mom of five, the demands on my time are never lacking. But working remotely allows me to better juggle all of the spinning pieces. If one of my children is sick, usually I'm not having to call out of work to stay home with them because I'm already home. If there's suddenly a resurge of Covid cases and schools close down, I'm not having to scramble to find childcare or weigh on the decision to leave my career to stay home full time with them.

Additionally, my dogs are happier. They aren't left alone for long hours of the day and get to play outside whenever they want. I'm comfortable in my work environment, making me more productive. And, there's no office drama (except for my 13-year-old’s occasional meltdown about not being able to find her favorite jeans).” -Amanda Clark, Director of Customer Success

Working remotely gives me the freedom to make the most of both my personal and working time. I love having the flexibility to maximize my working hours while also making time for my health and wellbeing. If I had to pick my favorite aspect of remote work, it would definitely be having the freedom to travel and visit family and friends.” -Shana Thoreson, Digital Marketer

Ease of setting appointments such as doctors appointments, the ability to take re-setting breaks like going for a walk, no commute, more time with pets and loved ones, and the ability to have more control over my schedule are benefits of remote work.” -Noël Phillips, Director of Partner Success

“I am able to work in a relaxed and casual environment which allows me to focus on work and be more productive. I also save time and money: no long commutes and sitting in traffic, saving money on gas, eating out for lunch, purchasing business attire, and less dry cleaning bills.” -Tammy Buck, Accounting Manager

“I like being able to decorate my desk/office space how I want because it's, well, mine! Wearing flip-flops at work, lunch breaks in the living room with my wife and cat, or walking in the neighborhood, and fewer interruptions are great—it’s much easier to focus!” -Austin Zorich, Customer Support Team Lead

“I enjoy being able to cook myself a healthy lunch at home, being able to take breaks to walk my dog and realign, and having my guitar nearby to play a little between calls to reset my mind and get my eyes away from screens. “ -Stephanie Ramos, Implementations Advocate

“For me, the biggest benefit is how many more productive hours I feel I have in my day simply not commuting. Whether that's being able to put more time into a project, I wouldn't have had otherwise (or terribly late at night) or more time in the mornings/evenings with the family

My favorite aspect of remote work is the flexibility. 15-minute breaks in an office are limiting, but working remotely could mean doing something productive around the house, taking the dog for a walk, doing a quick workout, etc. On a larger scale this flexibility means you can work from anywhere and provides an amazing opportunity to adventure by being able to 'set up shop' from wherever there's wifi.” -Lindsey Anderson, Product Manager

“Working remotely is completely freeing. My family can live wherever we want whenever we want. We can follow good weather, get to know different cities and countries like locals, or be close to extended family spread all over the globe. I love being able to get my job done on my own terms with complete control over my work environment and location. Each day, even each hour I can adjust where and how I’m working to best meet both my professional and personal needs. I’ve worked indoors, outdoors, from a desk, from bed, on airplanes, from the car, from a campground…the possibilities are endless.” -Colette Luke, Director of Product
