Examining New Recruiting Realities at PrismHR LIVE!

Two people discussing new recruiting realities at a conference

While “disruptor” has become an overused buzzword in the business, the COVID-19 pandemic unequivocally disrupted the entire world of work. Pandemic closures, protocols, and dangers upended every aspect of work and emphasized how at their base, every business is made up of people, and thus, how essential good human resource services are for businesses to thrive.

The pandemic disproportionately impacted the small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) served by HR service providers like PEOs, ASO, and HCMs. However, the SMBs partnering with HR service providers fared much better than those that didn’t.

The National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO) recently published a paper entitled “PEO Clients in the COVID-19 Pandemic” that found that during the pandemic, SMBs who are PEO clients were:

  • 32% less likely to have seen an overall negative effect on the business from the pandemic.
  • 82% more likely to have business operations back to normal (or better than normal!).
  • Growing employment on average of 6% since early 2020 (compared to the 1% decline for comparable SMBs).

A similar NAPEO paper entitled “PEOs: The Bounce-Back Partner Small Businesses Need” found that it’s not just during tough times that hiring an HR service provider is beneficial. SMBs that work with a PEO:

  • Grow 7-9% faster than comparable SMBs not working with a PEO.
  • Experience an average 10-14% lower employee turnover.
  • Are 50% less likely to close than their counterparts who don’t work with a PEO.

Because HR service providers are in the business of people, they’ve always had to remain agile since the wants and needs of workers are constantly shifting. It’s obviously paid off, allowing PEOs to help the SMBs they serve successfully navigate the pandemic. Congratulations are in order, but as any good HR service provider knows, this isn’t a business that lets you rest on your laurels. It’s time to start looking forward and figure out how to help SMBs navigate a post-pandemic world. Our advice? Start by reimagining recruiting and hiring strategies.

A March 2021 McKinsey report titled ”How HR can help build the organization of the future” begins by stating that “the pandemic underscores the urgency for a more dynamic talent and work model,” which is something we’ve been parroting if you follow this blog. Hiring is and will continue to be the biggest challenge facing SMBs. Hiring has always been a challenge, but with all the current and future changes happening, it’s time to focus on what future talent needs.

Successful recruiting is the backbone of successful businesses. As the preeminent private label applicant tracking system in the HR SaaS space, HiringThing is consistently reevaluating “the way we do things” and looking forward to how we can help HR service providers bring recruiting solutions to their clients.  We recently created The HiringThing Guide to Increasing Your Applicant Traffic,” which asks HR professionals to audit the hiring best practices that have been the gold standard and reimagine what’s necessary for continued future success.

SHRM research found 54% of SMBs don’t employ HR experts to help with their hiring. PEOs: use the NAPEO research cited in this piece to show potential clients what you can do for them—make sure to first ensure your hiring solutions can be a solution to the new realities of recruiting they face (hint: a dynamic ATS could exponentially help).
