HiringThing Named to Inc.'s Best Workplaces List

A HiringThing employees smiles at their inclusion on Inc.'s Best Workplaces list.

HiringThing is Honored as One of Inc. Magazine's Best Workplaces for 2023.

HiringThing is delighted to announce our inclusion in Inc.’s annual Best Workplaces list.

“When I founded HiringThing in 2012,” HiringThing founder and CEO Joshua Siler said, “I was intentional about creating the kind of company where I’d want to work, so our admission on Inc.’s Best Workplaces list is both great validation of our approach and immensely humbling.

“A common mistake I see many workplace leaders make,” Siler says, “is operating under the assumption that employees don’t want to work. At HiringThing, we operate under the assumption that our employees value doing good work and empower them to create an environment where they can be their best. It’s nice to see that paying off.”

After collecting data from thousands of submissions, Inc. selected 591 honorees this year. Each company that was nominated took part in an employee survey conducted by Quantum Workplace, which included topics such as management effectiveness, perks, fostering employee growth, and overall company culture. The organization’s benefits were also audited to determine the overall score and ranking.

“Being named to Best Workplaces is an honor that only a small fraction of companies have been able to claim,” says Inc. editor-in-chief Scott Omelianuk. “Proving to the world that you’re a magnet for talent and have a culture that keeps teams engaged, productive, and proud to come to work is a truly remarkable achievement.”

"The average person will spend 90,000 hours—⅓ of their life—at work,” says HiringThing’s HR Generalist, Becca Noland. “That’s a big chunk of our lives. It’s beneficial for companies to add value to their employees’ lives. While our remote status, generous PTO, and flexible schedules are 100% value adds, I believe the environment of respect, transparency, and collaboration got us this wonderful accolade. Perks and benefits are never a substitute for a non-toxic workplace where teammates feel valued, supported, and as if their thoughts matter. I’m incredibly proud to work for an organization that prioritizes people.”

“We’re hiring experts who’ve long been advising organizations that being someplace people want to work helps increase applicant traffic, boosts retention, and overall strengthens the productivity of a company. ” says HiringThing COO Jess Tejani, “It’s great to see that we can put our money where our mouths have been.”

Our Lessons in Building a Better Workplace

Becoming someplace where people want to work helps with hiring and retention. Becoming a best workplace doesn’t just happen. It takes a lot of time, thought, and effort. Here, we’ll share some of the strategies that have worked for HiringThing:

Be Data-Driven

Being data-driven is one of HiringThing’s values. Data-driven workplaces value insights gleaned from analytics and stats and use those insights to make decisions. Being data-driven means that decisions are governed by strategy, logic, and numbers, not just a “good idea” or worse, “vibe” someone had, which can lead to loss of productivity, frustration, and misplaced blames. Being data-driven isn’t perfect, but it takes much of the ambiguity out of what’s happening at work.

Prioritize a Work-Life Balance

72% of today’s employees say good work-life balance is essential to them (conversely, only 6% said it was not important at all). A lack of work-life balance is the second most popular reason employees would turn down a potentially good job offer (the first is too long a commute!). Despite the importance of a work-life balance for employees (not to mention that it fosters more creativity, productivity, engagement, and workplace satisfaction), many employees report they feel they have no support from their employees in maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

At HiringThing, we promote a healthy work-life balance with our flexible schedule, generous PTO plan, and regularly celebrate what happens outside of work. We use Slack to post about travel and hobbies (we have avid hikers, crafters, musicians, actors, climbers, ATV riders, and other hobbies amongst the HiringThing team) and don’t glorify overworking—team members aren’t expected to work or answer communication outside office hours or when they’re out of office.

Provide Generous PTO

It shouldn’t be just about the hours worked but the effort put in. It’s an old-fashioned notion that someone who never takes time off is a better employee than someone who goes on a three-week vacation. At HiringThing, we offer unlimited PTO, flexible daily schedules, and flex Fridays during the summer months. Our productivity levels remain high because of these policies, not despite them.

Promote Autonomy

Since we’re entirely remote with a flexible schedule, HiringThing employees can design the workspace and, in some cases, schedule that suits them best. We’ve found that everyone works better when we give our team the autonomy to work the way they want.

Too often, employees feel like powerless cogs with no sense of purpose or urgency. That leads to a lack of engagement, passion, and productivity. Providing employees autonomy shows you trust and respect your workforce, which pays dividends.

Respect Your Employees

There’s been a slate of poor behavior from CEOs in the media lately. These poorly behaved CEOs are operating under the assumption that their teams don’t value doing good work and want nothing more than to get away with doing as little as possible.

We don’t operate under that mindset here at HiringThing. We operate under the assumption that all of our employees sincerely want to do good work—we’re a team of smart people tackling complex problems—and that respect is what helps HiringThing offer transparency, autonomy, and a healthy work-life balance to the team, which in turn, creates both a strong culture and productive workplace.

Celebrate Your Team

Making it onto the Inc. list—and building a strong company culture—are team efforts. Creating a good product and a successful company is a team effort, but too many organizations, and specifically, too many workplace leaders, forget that.

So, celebrate the achievements of your team! Being recognized for positive contributions goes a long way towards helping individuals feel happy and appreciated and work, and studies have shown that when we feel happy and appreciated at work, we’re up to 20% more productive.

There are many ways to recognize good employees. We do shoutouts during our weekly meetings when good things happen and utilize HiThrive, which integrates into Slack and is a great way for teammates to recognize one another. Recognition can also be as simple as giving credit where credit is due and thanking teammates for insights or contributions.

Practice Transparency

80% of today’s workers want insights into their organizations' decision making and 87% want transparency in future workplaces. It’s not just employees who benefit from transparency, though, as it helps improve overall morale and engagement, lower job-related stress, boost productivity, and generate higher revenue.

We practice transparency by sharing wins and recognition at our all-hands meetings and losses and challenges. This keeps everyone on the same page and helps build trust. Being data-driven helps exponentially here—we’ve already said it above, but it’s worth repeating that having data-backed decisions reduces ambiguity.

Go Remote If You Can

We’re 100% remote at HiringThing and wouldn’t have it any other way! We’re not alone in this either—Buffer’s State of Remote Work report found that 99% of remote workers want to continue working remotely!

Not every workplace or industry is built for remote work, but we’d recommend trying it if your business supports it. Check out exactly why our team loves remote work.
